The joint training course, entitled “Nuclear School Experiments on Reactor Physics and Neutron Applications for Asia Pacific Region”, was held from 30 March to 10 April 2015. Aimed at developing technical skills and providing basic background on nuclear reactor physics via research reactor experiments, the programme included practical experiments at two TRIGA research reactors (KARTINI in Indonesia and PUSPATI in Malaysia).

The IAEA provided financial support for the participation of professionals with basic nuclear experience from Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Iraq, Malaysia, Thailand and Viet Nam. The participants will be able to use their newly required skills in future or current nuclear reactor activities in their countries.
The course was conducted as a follow-up to the “Training Course on Education and Training to Support Nuclear Power Programmes in APEC Economies”, held in Malaysia in August 2013.
IAEA Member States recognize the need for skilled and trained professionals to manage future nuclear power programmes or non-power applications of nuclear technology. The Research Reactors Section of the IAEA Department of Nuclear Energy assists Member States to create a pool of experts capable of carrying out nuclear research, as well as building, operating and maintaining nuclear facilities. The IAEA Peaceful Uses Initiative project on Increasing the Global Supply of Nuclear Education and Training Programmes Through Research Reactor Facilities, with financial support from the United States of America, supports this objective.
